Underground storage tanks (USTs) installed before 1988 should have been upgraded, or removed by December 22, 1998 according to Federal regulations. Owners of UST facilities who missed this deadline are finding their insurance carrier canceling coverage. In addition, the federal or state government can 'Red Tag' the USTs that are not upgraded.
