| BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION
An indoor air quality source of contamination that is gaining momentum in society and being recognized as a serious health concern is the effect of biological contamination on the living environment. Biological contamination includes molds, mildew, other sources of fungi, bacteria, yeasts, animal dander, insect, bird or rodent scat and pollen or dust. Fungi and bacteria are simple, microscopic organisms that are found virtually in every environment. They become a contamination source in elevated colony forming units (cfu's) and dependent upon the Species, can be potentially hazardous to your health. These sources of contamination require three basic needs:
As a result, the location of these organisms are relatively predictable and occur in concentration either from a catastrophic event, a leaky roof or foundation or under carpet, (tile, plywood, etc) in an area isolated from the effects of sun, wind or human traffic.
These indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns can exacerbate pre-existing problems such as hyper-sensitivities, asthma and allergies in ways that could be “masked” by the aforementioned conditions which makes medical determinations for these organisms as sources of concern difficult. Very little regulatory guidance is presently available on fungi and bacteria. As a result, a client relies on the expertise and experience of the industrial hygienist in assessing problems related to mold or bacteria. Sampling can be in the form of air samples or wipe samples and analytical results should be analyzed by a laboratory, accredited by a nationally recognized, microbiological proficiency program.
